VEASEY’S COURSES FOR THE GOVERNMENT CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY: STRUCTURE AND PHILOSOPHY

Set out below is a framework of Veasey’s preparation courses for the G.C.C.

  1. THE PLANT COURSE:    Consists of 30 study and working papers for mines and 23 for factories, and 50 student series exercises (approximately 400 past examination questions to be worked by the student to reinforce the lessons given.). The course also includes over 700 worked past examination questions in support of the lessons.
  2. The LAW COURSE: This consists of one module of three parts. Part one is a comprehensive study guide. Part Two includes the last ten years’ of examination questions and model answers (27 examinations), 27 student tests. Part Three is a set ofmock formal examinations.
  3. PAST EXAM PAPERS; PLANT: A collection of exam questions and answers is provided in two book supplements of; 1. Mechanical; 2. Electrical and Safety/Risk. A comprehensive study is now possible of the exam papers for the last 10 years. A great aid to the completion period of the studies.
  4. The ‘HELP LINE’( Darrell keep caps) for students with queries or problems.

Our consultant is available at any time to assist students.

RISK MANAGEMENT: A new course on this important aspect of health and safety is now added. Elements of this topic are constantly appearing in the exam. A plan is essential.

THE PLANT COURSE:

The papers have been prepared and honed over the last 87 years to meet the requirements of the examination only. The syllabus, however, is so extensive that these papers cover a very wide spectrum of engineering knowledge and needs. The modules stay as reference sources on engineer’s shelves for many years. The papers are structured to provide a good basic reading of the fundamentals/laws of the topic with Formulae, examples and diagrams. This is followed by a section on past examination questions with model answers. The lesson is completed with two relevant series of student work. These exercises are nearly always based on past papers as well. The student’s work is sent in to us for marking and comment. Upon receipt of the work a set of model answers is sent immediately to the student for checking and confirmation of his work. The answers in this section are often of a teaching nature and are very useful adjuncts to the study. The papers can be worked in any order depending on the student’s needs. When the student is in the final stages of preparation for the examination the books of examination papers should be used and provide a very useful tool.

The HELP LINE is always open for advice and encouragement.

THE LAW COURSE:

The objective of this course is to make the learning process of a difficult subject easier and more meaningful. The student is encouraged at every point to navigate in the law book and write answers to exam questions, and to TO learn critical areas. There is also an emphasis on areas most commonly questioned. If the student does all the set work of 27 tests, the law required for this examination should be known thoroughly.
There is one module in three parts in this course; i.e. Study Guide, Exam Papers and Answers, and the Mock Exams.

PART ONE, is a 27 page study guide. This examination demands quite different learning techniques from the plant course. Here the demand is for rote learning. Facts must be known and they must be correct. The guide offers several methods for acquiring skills for such learning. Use the walk about technique to consolidate learning.

PART TWO, is a set of the last several years of examination questions and the answers side by side with comment where relevant. Each examination is followed by a mock exam (27 exams in all). Some of the tests are structured for the student to write questions and answer them; a much stronger learning exercise. A self test mask in included.

PART THREE, has three (3) mock examinations for the student to have a final experience of an examination condition under invigilation (by a dear one or friend.)

COMMENT: Some Thoughts.

Our greatest challenge as a correspondence college is to manage the nature of the genre in relation to the challenges and inconsistencies of study. This is, of course, a common problem with the all such systems. Engineers have very busy lives at work, and they are now at the post tertiary stage of their studies, which means that they now they have families and commitments in society. To meet this challenge we have tried to make the Veaseys courseS concise and meaningful and aimed firmly at the ‘ticket’. The lessons are of a reasonable length and provide fair worked examples from past ‘ticket’ examinations. Furthermore our marking consultants are trained to encourage and help wherever possible.

A very important point to bear in mind is the contribution of management in this process. It is possible to strengthen the resolve and determination of students with encouragement and interest from management together with some form of incentive. In its most valuable form this contribution is the recognition of the young engineers’ work and progress in their studies together with some form of benevolent monitoring. The financial incentive for a more rewarding career, and that of becoming a professional engineer, is hopefully already strongly in place.
